Reporters, Vigilant Eyes of Society

TEHRAN Reporters are vigilant eyes of the political system in every society, said an official here yesterday.
Talking to the TEHRAN TIMES on the commemoration of the Reporters' Day, Mohammadreza Tajik, the vice president for social affairs and a lecturer at Shahid Beheshti University added that a reporter plays a significant role in the development of the society.
Development is based on knowledge and knowledge on information, thus, a reporter can prepare the ground for the development process, he concluded. Due to the nature of his profession, a reporter should have security in the society, he said. Reporters have to avoid political games to disseminate news accurately, he said, adding that a journalist should not be influenced by the factional politics. Stressing on the need for having legal guarantees for reporters, he said journalists and reporters should be safe so long as they abide by the law.
Unfortunately, many of our officials feel no responsibility towards the people due to the wrong political culture being aired in the society. Also talking to the TEHRAN TIMES, Masoud Rezaei, a member of Muslim Journalists Association (MJA) said that reporters are considered as watchdogs who show the shortcomings and problems of the society. Without journalists and reporters we would not have been able to move toward development, he said. By approving logical bills concerning the press and the reporters the Majlis can provide the reporters with the necessary security.
Although the reporters have a stressful job their income is not enough which can adversely affect their profession. Probably our officials have a wrong perception of the journalists, he said, adding this is why they don't give proper information to them. Some of them think that the journalists are interlopers and adventurers. The reporters are the representatives of the society and hence their questions should not be considered a part of factional games. The reporters on their part should not also abuse their profession for the sake of factional interests, he said.
